Abdominal Ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging examination used to assess selected organs and structures within the abdomen. If you have been referred for an abdominal scan in Nairobi, Clintec Medical Imaging Services can provide information about the examination, preparation requirements and appointment availability.

The scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs. It does not use ionising radiation.

What Does an Abdominal Ultrasound Examine?

Depending on the scan requested, an abdominal ultrasound may examine:

  • Liver: Assesses its appearance and may identify certain structural abnormalities.
  • Gallbladder: Helps assess gallstones and selected gallbladder abnormalities.
  • Kidneys: Examines kidney size, structure and certain abnormalities.
  • Spleen: Assesses the size and appearance of the spleen.
  • Pancreas: Evaluates visible portions of the pancreas, although visualisation can be limited.
  • Abdominal aorta: May assess its diameter and appearance when included in the examination.

A complete abdominal ultrasound does not necessarily provide detailed assessment of every abdominal organ or every possible condition.

When Is an Abdominal Ultrasound Recommended?

A healthcare professional may request an abdominal scan to investigate:

  • Upper or general abdominal pain.
  • Suspected gallstones.
  • Certain liver or kidney abnormalities.
  • Abdominal swelling or a suspected mass.
  • Selected abnormalities identified through examination or laboratory tests.
  • Follow-up of known abdominal findings.

The need for an ultrasound and the appropriate scope of the examination depend on the clinical question.

How to Prepare for an Abdominal Ultrasound

You may be instructed to fast for several hours before an abdominal ultrasound, particularly when the gallbladder is being examined. The exact preparation requirements depend on the requested scan.

Do not assume that fasting is required for every ultrasound. Confirm the instructions with us before your appointment, especially if you have a medical condition that affects eating or drinking.

What Happens During the Scan?

You will usually lie on an examination bed while a sonographer applies ultrasound gel to the skin and moves a handheld probe over your abdomen.

You may be asked to change position or briefly hold your breath to improve the images. The examination is generally well tolerated.
